What is Facelift Surgery?
A facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that restores your youthful appearance by lifting and tightening your facial skin and tissues.
Medically known as Rhytidectomy, this procedure reduces visible signs of aging. It mainly improves:
- Sagging skin on the cheeks and jawline
- Deep folds around the nose and mouth
- Loose skin and fat in the neck, which is often called a turkey neck
- Jowls around the jawline
When the underlying muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed or repositioned, the face appears firmer and more youthful. It is an effective and permanent solution to address the changes to your skin that worsen as you age.
At Millennial Plastic Surgery, our expert surgeons help turn back the clock on aging with advanced facelift procedures. They specialize in both traditional and awake facelift procedures to smooth wrinkles and creases, while lifting droopy skin that has started to sag over time, creating a healthy, revitalized, and timeless look.

Why Should I Consider a Facelift?
Age-related changes to your face and neck can make you feel self-conscious and affect your confidence. Crow’s feet, marionette lines, sagging skin, or laugh lines become more noticeable over time. These changes to your face are usually caused by a loss of collagen, but genetics and environmental factors can also impact skin health.
A facelift is a perfect opportunity to restore your natural beauty and achieve a healthier, more energetic appearance that can improve your self-confidence.
Both men and women may consider facelift surgery when they begin to notice visible signs of aging in the face and neck. There is no particular age that’s right for having a facelift, as signs of aging can start as early as your 30s and 40s, and worsen with time.

The term facelift refers to a variety of procedures designed to target different areas of the face and achieve specific results. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option based on your facial structure and the level of correction you wish to achieve.
Types of facelift surgery include:
- Traditional face lift. It addresses the entire face and neck. The skin is separated from the underlying tissues, excess skin is removed, and muscle and skin are tightened and repositioned. If needed, your surgeon may transfer fat from other areas of the body to restore its shape.
- Mini face lift. Also known as a limited or short-scar facelift, it targets the lower face and jawline. It is ideal for patients with mild to moderate signs of aging, seeking subtle enhancement. The surgeon uses smaller incisions, which shorten recovery time and produce effective outcomes.
- Mid face lift. Also known as a cheek lift, this type of facelift targets the cheeks and under-eye area to restore youthful volume and smooth deep folds. It is ideal for patients who want to address sagging, hollowing, and a sunken appearance in the middle of the face, without opting for a full facelift. The result is a well-defined facial structure.
- Deep plane face lift. It lifts and repositions the deeper facial tissues and structure of the face, not just the skin. It is ideal for patients with significant sagging or drooping of the cheeks and jawline, restoring youthful contours that can last for years.
Dr. Shokrian understands your desire to look your best, feel confident, and enhance the natural beauty reflected in your face. He customizes facelift surgery to address your unique aesthetic goals and chooses an approach that best complements your facial features.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift Surgery?
A facelift surgery may be the best option for improving visible signs of aging in the face and neck to achieve a naturally revitalized appearance.
You may be a good candidate if you meet the following criteria:
- You have sagging skin around the cheeks, jawline, or neck.
- You are developing deep wrinkles or folds, especially around the nose and mouth.
- You have jowls or loss of facial definition along the jawline.
- You have a well-balanced facial bone structure that supports facelift surgery.
- Your skin has sufficient elasticity and flexibility.
- You are in good overall health and do not have medical conditions that could delay healing.
- You do not smoke or are willing to stop before and after surgery.
- You have realistic expectations about the results.
Your surgeon will explain how the facelift procedure can address your concerns and help create a more balanced and rejuvenated look. They will also advise you on the effectiveness of the procedure based on your skin condition and desired outcome, so you can make an informed decision about your treatment.
What to Expect During a Facelift Consultation?
Your first step toward facelift surgery is a consultation with one of our expert surgeons, Dr. Shokrian & Dr. Mohamed Elfar. They will answer your questions and guide you through the process, so you understand what the procedure involves and how to prepare for surgery.
The consultation includes reviewing your medical history, evaluating your overall health and lifestyle, and assessing your skin condition and facial tissues. Our surgeons will discuss your facelift options, measure your face, and take photographs to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique features and desired changes. They will explain what to expect from your facelift, including the recovery process, as well as any potential risks or complications.
Dr. Shokrian and Dr. Mohamed Elfar use advanced technology and techniques to deliver precise, natural-looking outcomes, while prioritizing your safety and individual concerns. With their expertise and artistic approach, they have helped thousands of patients achieve stunning, lasting enhancements.
What Happens During a Facelift Procedure?
- You will receive general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the type and extent of the facelift.
- The surgeon will make precise incisions. These incisions are usually made along the hairline, temples, around the ears, or under the chin to lift and tighten the underlying muscles and remove excess skin.
- The underlying tissues are lifted and repositioned, fat may be sculpted or redistributed, and surplus skin is trimmed to create a smoother, refined contour. When deep tissues of the face, or neck are repositioned, it creates a firmer foundation.
- The incisions are carefully closed with skin adhesives or sutures to minimize visible scarring.
- After the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery room where you will be observed for a few hours. Once the medical team confirms that you are stable, they will prepare you for discharge.
A facelift is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning most patients can return home the same day after surgery. However, in some situations, an overnight stay may be recommended. This may occur if you undergo a more extensive facelift, have multiple procedures performed at the same time, have certain medical conditions, or if your surgeon prefers closer monitoring for safety purposes.

Facelift Side Effects and Risks
As with any other surgical procedure, a facelift carries some potential side effects and risks. Although advanced technology and attentive aftercare have significantly reduced the likelihood of complications, it is important to understand what you may experience during recovery.
Commonly experienced side effects may include:
- Swelling and bruising
- Mild discomfort or tightness
- Temporary numbness in certain areas of the face
- Sensitivity or tenderness around the incision sites
- These effects gradually improve as the healing process progresses.
Less common risks may include:
- Infection
- Bleeding or hematoma
- Scarring
- Changes in skin sensation
- Delayed healing
Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you during your consultation and provide detailed post-operative care instructions to minimize complications and ensure a safe recovery.

212-421-7123Can I Have a Non-Surgical Facelift?
A non-surgical facelift is an excellent option to refresh your image without undergoing surgery. Non-surgical facelifts use minimally invasive techniques to lift, smooth, and rejuvenate your facial features.
Temporary non-surgical procedures include:
- Facial resurfacing. This procedure uses chemical peels or laser treatments to remove the outer layers of your facial skin, improving texture, tone, and firmness for a smoother, renewed finish.
- Facial fat transfer. It uses fat from other parts of the body to restore volume and sculpt your facial contours for a natural, youthful look.
- Thread lift. Medical-grade threads are placed under the skin to gently lift and tighten sagging areas, creating a firmer, more refreshed appearance.
- Facetite. This treatment targets fat and loose skin using radiofrequency energy directed at and below the skin to stimulate collagen production.
- Accutite. This skin-tightening treatment uses radiofrequency to tighten and revive skin.
- Dermal fillers. Different substances are injected directly under the skin to fill in wrinkles and to add fullness and volume.
Non-surgical facelift procedures are quick, more affordable, and require little or no downtime. While the results of these treatments may not be as long-lasting or dramatic as a surgical facelift, they provide noticeable improvements and are a good option for maintenance or subtle enhancements.
Can Other Procedures Be Combined with a Face Lift?
Once you’ve decided to go through with a face lift, you may want to consider having additional procedures at the same time to save money or to achieve specific results. There are many options available in cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of your facial features, such as:
- Neck lift
- Brow lift
- Eyelid surgery
- Fat grafting
- Lip enhancement
- Skin resurfacing treatments
Neck lift.
This procedure tightens loose skin and underlying muscles in the neck, removes excess fat, and creates a smoother, more sculpted profile that complements the results of a face lift.
Brow lift.
It raises sagging eyebrows, smooths forehead lines, and opens up the eye for a more alert and fresh appearance.
Eyelid surgery.
It removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids, reducing the effects of fatigue and creating a more youthful, refreshed look.
Fat grafting.
It extracts fat from other parts of the body and injects it into cheeks, temples, or under the eyes to restore natural fullness of the face.
Lip enhancement.
Lip enhancements or fillers add volume to lips or smooth deep facial lines, enhancing facial balance and youthful contours.
Skin resurfacing treatments.
They include laser resurfacing and chemical peels that help improve skin texture, wrinkles, and repair sun damage.
These treatments help remove visible signs of aging around the neck and jaw while improving overall facial harmony. Your surgeon will guide you through the available options and help you make an informed decision about which procedures can be performed together to achieve your desired results. *
*Your surgeon’s recommendation will depend on your aesthetic goals, facial structure and the areas you want to improve. Some procedures cannot be combined due to safety reasons.

How Long Do Face Lift Results Last?
It is necessary to know that despite the aging process, the results of a good facelift can last up to 10 years, and longer. You can enjoy a youthful and refreshed appearance for a longer period than non-surgical options.
You can preserve the effects of your facelift surgery by making healthy lifestyle choices and adopting habits that keep your skin look youthful and refreshed longer. Complementary treatments, such as skin-tightening procedures or fat grafting can also help maintain skin volume and elasticity, supporting prolonged and successful facelift results. Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions on how you can prolong the results of your facelift.
Face Lift Recovery Timeline
Facelift recovery is a gradual process, and the timeline varies depending on the type of facelift, any additional procedures, and your body’s natural healing ability. Following your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines will help you recover safely, minimize complications, and achieve the best possible outcome.
You may experience swelling, bruising, and mild to moderate discomfort during the initial weeks. Most patients can resume light daily activities by the second or third week as swelling and bruising begin to subside. By this time, noticeable differences in facial contours may start to appear.
You can usually return to work and social activities between weeks 4 and 6. However, it is essential to avoid bending, stretching, or strenuous movements to prevent pressure on your incisions. By this stage, the effects of a facelift become more apparent.
It will take at least a few more months for the tissues to settle and scars to soften before you can see the final results of your surgery. Within 3 to 6 months, your face takes on a naturally lifted, harmonious, and rejuvenated look.
How Much Does a Face Lift Cost?
The cost of a facelift can vary for each patient, depending on the type of facelift they seek, such as a mini facelift, a full or standard facelift, or a more complex facelift. You can expect the price to increase with the complexity of the procedure and if additional surgical or non-surgical treatments are combined during the same session.
Some other factors that can influence facelift cost include:
- Surgeon’s expertise and experience
- The extent of the procedure
- Additional procedures combined with your facelift
- Anesthesia cost
- Facility fees
- Postoperative care
- Followup visits
Since your treatment plan is fully customized, your surgeon will provide a final quote after a detailed in-person consultation. While combining procedures may increase the upfront cost, it is more cost-effective than scheduling each treatment separately. You undergo a single surgery, make one payment, and only need one recovery period.

Is a Facelift Covered by Insurance?
A facelift is an elective cosmetic procedure performed to improve visual appeal rather than treat a medical condition. Due to this, most health insurance plans do not cover the cost, and you will have to pay for the procedure from your pocket.
However, there are rare exceptions when insurance may cover some cost if the surgery is considered medically necessary. It may include facial reconstruction after an injury or trauma, correction of facial paralysis or deformities, or removal of excess skin that causes functional problems.
In such cases, you will need to provide medical records or documentation from your healthcare professional confirming the procedure is medically necessary. You may also need prior authorization from your insurance company before the procedure can be approved.
At Millennial Plastic Surgery, we realize that paying for a facelift can be a significant investment, especially if it’s combined with other procedures. That’s why we offer flexible payment plans and third-party financing options that help make your treatment cost more affordable.
