Labiaplasty, also referred to as labia reduction, is a cosmetic genital procedure that helps reduce the length and size of the labia minora of the vagina. This procedure is a part of our great Mommy Makeover NYC combined with other procedures such as Tummy Tuck, Liposuction360 and more! (For more information, contact our office.) Many women are born with large labia minora or have a large labia after childbirth or with aging. Labiaplasty are for patients that are interested to enhance the appearance of their vagina for a boost of confidence and relieve discomfort from chronic labial irritation.
Benefits from receiving Labiaplasty:
• Elimination of twisting and tugging of the labia from exercise
• Relieve any discomfort from sexual intimacy
• Diminish itching and irritation
• Symmetrical labia minora or vagina
• Sculpted and slimmer vagina size
• More comfort while wearing tight and revealing clothing
At Millennial Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Shokrian’s main priority is the satisfaction and health of the patient. Labiaplasty surgery can greatly enhance the appearance of your vagina from the reduction of the inner and outer labia. If you are receiving discomfort or are unhappy with the appearance of your vagina, look into this procedure to boost your self confidence, feel more feminine, and give you more comfort during exercise and sexual intimacy.
Major vs. Minor Labiaplasty
Patients will either receive a labia majora or labia minora for labiaplasty. Patients with a lot of tissue in the inner lips of the vagina are candidates for a labia minora plasty. Labia majoraplasty are for women patients that have excessive tissue in the outer lips of the vagina that are hair-bearing.
Labia Minoraplasty Procedure
Labia minoraplasty is completed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. There are two different kinds of methods to perform this procedure which are the wedge method and the trim method. Dr. Shokrian will discuss with you about the pros and cons of both options before surgery and help you find an option that will suit your desired results.
The trim method is when the outer edges of the labia minora are trimmed, which creates a smaller and more symmetrical vagina profile. The exposed edges of the labia minora will be stitched together using dissolvable stitches. This method can eliminate discoloration and hyperpigmentation of the outer edges of the labia. There will be minimal scarring along the edges of the labia due to the incisions. Using this method will allow the greatest amount of tissue to be removed.
The wedge method, a V-shaped piece of tissue is cut surgically from the middle part of each labium. For a more natural appearance, the edges of the labia will be patched together, to maintain the existing edges of the labia. In comparison to the trim method, the wedge method does not remove a large amount of excessive tissue and does not help with hyperpigmentation of tissue. While the wedge method benefits from not producing any noticeable scarring, not every patient is a candidate for the procedure.
Labia minoraplasty surgery lasts for about one hour.
Labia Majoraplasty Procedure
Like, Labia Minoraplasty, Labia majoraplasty is also done under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. In order to remove excess fat located in the outer lips of the vagina, light liposuction is the first step to this procedure to reduce the vaginal profile.
After the patient has been numbed and extra fat has been removed if necessary, two small parts of tissue are removed from the inner section of each outer labium. All incisions are made in the crease of the inner and outer labia, meaning no scarring can be seen following labia majoraplasty and for a more natural appearance. After the removal of the appropriate amount of tissue from the labia majora, the labia is sutured shut.
This procedure can last up to one to two hours.
Recovery and Results
Labiaplasty is considered a minor painful procedure, therefore does not have a lengthy recovery period. Patients should plan for two to four days of downtime and up to one week off from work following surgery.
The common side effects of this procedure includes but not all are soreness, bruising, swelling and itchiness. Ice packs may be used intermittently for comfort and help with the swelling. To help the comfort immediately after surgery, pain medication will also be prescribed. Most swelling and bruising will fade in the first few weeks of recovery. However, swelling can linger for as long as up to 6 months post surgery. We recommend our patients to sleep with elevated hips for a quicker recovery and to reduce swelling.
Patients will need to refrain from exercise, strenuous activities, intercourse and using tampons for about one month. Results are evident in four to six weeks with the common side effects continuing to diminish. Patients will receive their final results to develop in four to six months without any side effects lingering.
Q&A with Dr.Shokrian
Am I a good candidate for labiaplasty?
If you are someone who is unsatisfied with the shape, size or appearance of your labia and as well as experience regular discomfort from excessive tissue during activities such as intercourse and exercise, then yes! You are a good candidate. Ideally, a good candidate for this procedure is a non-smoker, is in relatively good health and has realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Labiaplasty can be performed on women of most ages, including minors.
Do I need labia majoraplasty or labia minoraplasty surgery?
If you’re receiving discomfort from your inner vaginal lips or would like a more appealing appearance on the inner vaginal lips, then a labia minoraplasty would be the best option for you. If your main concern is on the appearance or size of your outer vaginal lips, you can benefit from a labia majoraplasty surgery. During the in-person evaluation, we can discuss the options and go more in depth with each procedure so we can find the right procedure for your body.
Is the wedge or trim method better for an inner labiaplasty?
Many patients go through trim method procedure because it allows the most amount of tissue removal and eliminates discoloration of the tissue. However, some patients may benefit more from the wedge method. The patients that want to remove discoloration the edges of the labia minora are recommended to do the trim method. During your in-person evaluation, we can figure out what options are right for you.
How visible is scarring following labiaplasty?
Scarring is minimal in all cases for labiaplasty surgery. During outer labiaplasty, all incisions are made in the inner crease and outer labia, creating inconspicuous scarring that is not noticeable. With the wedge method for inner labiaplasty, the natural edges of the labia minora are left intact and scarring is virtually nonexistent. Patients who undergo inner labiaplasty using the trim method may have scars along the exposed edges of the inner labia, but scarring is always very minimal and unnoticeable.
Will undergoing labiaplasty affect sensations during sex?
Sensation during intercourse is not affected.
How soon following labiaplasty can I shower?
After 24 hours following labiaplasty surgery, patients can shower. However, patients should wait until incisions are fully healed and closed before swimming and/or taking a bath.
Can labiaplasty be combined with vaginoplasty?
Most definitely. If you are interested in rejuvenating both the inner and outer vagina, then let us know during your first consultation.
