What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures today, known for delivering impressive, natural-looking results. It is an excellent option for anyone seeking voluminous, elevated, and shapelier buttocks without the need for implants.

This procedure uses your own body fat, harvested through liposuction from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, and transfers it to the buttocks and hips. It optimizes shape and density while also sculpting your figure by removing unwanted fat from problem areas and improving overall body contours.

Also known as buttock augmentation with fat grafting or safe subcutaneous buttock augmentation, a BBL enhances proportion so you can achieve a more sculpted figure and overall body aesthetics, while boosting confidence in your appearance.

At Millennial Plastic Surgery, we help you redefine the contours of your rear end and achieve a beautifully improved, confident look. Dr. Shokrian works closely with you to create a customized treatment plan, whether for a traditional or awake BBL, designed to enhance your curves, highlight your best features, and deliver long-lasting, natural-looking results.

The personal care and consideration I received is exceptional.

Why You Should Consider a BBL?

A BBL is more than a cosmetic procedure. It is an effective way to boost your physique safely and achieve a fuller, shapelier silhouette.

Here are some reasons why you should go for a BBL:

    • You seek a naturally rounded and lifted form that comes from your own fat, without needing implants.
    • You want to eliminate unwanted fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or back to achieve a slimmer, more proportionate figure.
    • You want the ideal body shape and size that you have always dreamed of.
    • You want to achieve the confidence that comes from feeling and looking your best.

Whether age, genetics, or weight fluctuations have left your buttocks looking flat, deflated, droopy, or you are simply unhappy with your body image, a BBL gives you the opportunity to get that curvy, elevated bottom you crave.

Am I a Good Candidate for a BBL?

You may be a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift if:

    • You have good overall health and are close to your ideal weight.
    • You don’t have any health conditions that could complicate the surgical procedure or recovery.
    • You have sufficient fat in areas like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks that can be used for transfer to the buttocks.
    • You want a voluminous, perky, and naturally contoured buttock shape without going for implants.
    • You have realistic expectations about surgery outcomes and understand the recovery process.
    • You agree to follow post-operative care instructions as provided by your surgeon for optimal safety and results.

A BBL can help you achieve a more voluminous, rounded, and accentuated buttock shape, enhancing your realistic curves while making you feel confident and comfortable in your own body.

It is important to note that not everyone is a suitable candidate for a BBL, particularly individuals with certain medical conditions or insufficient fat for transfer. During a personalized consultation, Dr. Shokrian will clearly explain the procedure, review your eligibility, answer your questions, and help you determine whether a BBL or an alternative approach is the best way to achieve your goals. He may also recommend pre- or post-surgery treatments to optimize safety, recovery, and results.

How Does a Brazilian Butt Lift Work?

Despite its name, a Brazilian Butt Lift is not technically a butt lift. Instead, it uses fat harvested from other areas of your body and transfers it to the buttocks, creating a fuller, shapelier, and naturally contoured appearance.

The parts of the body that provide the source of the added fat depend on your desired figure, as well as where you have fat to spare.

A Brazilian butt lift surgery is a two-step process that involves:

    • Liposuction – Excess fat is carefully removed from different areas of the body using liposuction. This not only provides the fat needed for transfer but also contours these areas for a slimmer, more proportionate figure.
    • Fat grafting – The extracted fat is purified and then strategically injected into the buttocks to create a fuller, lifted, natural-looking profile. The fat is injected into several points in the bum to build up volume. These injection points are specially chosen to enhance the shape, size, and symmetry of your butt.

Complications from Brazilian Butt Lifts are rare. Modern techniques have significantly reduced early risks, such as fat embolism, and strict safety guidelines established by dedicated BBL Task Forces help ensure the highest standards of patient care during the procedure.

    Types of Brazilian Butt Lift

There are several types of Brazilian Butt Lift procedures that can enhance your body shape or modify it to achieve your desired results.

    Different types of BBL include:

    • Traditional BBL – It uses liposuction to remove fat from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. The harvested fat is purified and then injected into the buttocks to achieve the desired shape, lift, and volume.
    • Skinny BBL – It works best for patients with limited body fat or athletic build who seek enhanced curves rather than dramatic volume. Advanced liposuction techniques are used to carefully harvest and strategically transfer fat from various areas of the body, resulting in a more refined and proportionate silhouette.
    • Petite BBL – It is designed for patients who want subtle enhancement rather than a dramatic change. A smaller amount of fat is transferred to the buttocks to create a seamless, lifted form that complements the body’s proportions.
    • Mini BBL – It involves liposuction to remove fat from just two areas, often the lower flanks and upper thighs, which are chosen for optimal enhancement, for enhanced shape. It is ideal for patients with a slimmer frame who have minimal fat to spare but seek improvement in contour and volume.
    • Lipo 360 BBL –  It combines fat transfer to the buttocks with 360-degree liposuction around the waist, flanks, and abdomen to create a more dramatic, contoured waist and enhanced profile.
    • Non-Surgical BBL – A non-surgical BBL uses dermal fillers or fat-mimicking injections to enhance the shape and volume of the buttocks without surgery. This option provides temporary, subtle lifting and contouring for patients who seek improved curves without surgical incisions or extended downtime.

BBLs can be customized to suit each patient’s body type and aesthetic goals, using a variety of techniques to deliver the best outcome. Your surgeon will assess your anatomy and guide you in choosing the approach that best achieves your desired results.

What Happens During a BBL Procedure?

    • You will receive either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia to ensure you remain comfortable and safe throughout the procedure. In case of awake lipo, you will be given local anesthesia with numbing medication, allowing you to remain conscious but relaxed and pain-free during the procedure.
    • Small incisions are made, and a small vacuum-like tube, known as a cannula, is used to carefully remove excess fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, flanks, or back using liposuction. This step not only provides the fat required for transfer to your butt, but it also contours the donor areas and enhances your overall body shape.
    • The harvested fat is then purified. Any excess fluids and damaged cells are removed to maximize its survival in the new location.
    • The purified fat is strategically injected into the buttocks. The surgeon sculpts the area to enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of your buttocks, creating a subtle effect. This is the most crucial step as it provides precise control over the curves and projection of your buttocks.
    • The incisions are closed, and compression garments will be applied to minimize swelling and promote proper healing.
    • Once the procedure is complete, you will be moved to a recovery room, where the medical team will monitor you until you wake up from the sedation and feel comfortable.

A Brazilian Butt Lift is generally considered an outpatient surgery. This means you can go home the same day once you are stable and ready for a safe discharge. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative instructions to help you care for your new curves at home and ensure the best possible results.

The personal care and consideration I received is exceptional.

    Recovering From a BBL

Recovery after a BBL varies from person to person and depends on the number of areas treated, the amount of fat removed, and your body’s natural healing process.  Because a Brazilian Butt Lift involves both liposuction and fat transfer, proper care during the first few weeks is crucial for a smooth recovery and achieving the best possible results.

Mild to moderate pain, bruising, and swelling are common but typically improve within a few weeks. Light walking and movement are encouraged for normal circulation and healing. However, the key to successful recovery is taking it easy.

One of the most important aspects of recovery is protecting the newly transferred fat. You should avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for 2 to 3 weeks. Most patients can return to normal activities and work within one to two weeks after the procedure. However, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4 to 6 weeks or until cleared by your surgeon. Giving the transferred fat adequate time to stabilize is essential for achieving desired outcomes.

Your doctor will recommend using a BBL pillow to reduce pressure on the treated area. Wearing compression garments can help minimize swelling, support healing, and improve contouring.  Although you will see immediate results after surgery, it will take at least 4 to 6 months for the swelling to subside, the fat to stabilize, and the buttock shape to become more predictable.

Attend all the follow-up appointments with the surgeon so they can monitor your progress and address any concerns throughout your recovery.

Implants vs Fat Transfer for Buttock Augmentation

Butt implants are a popular option for permanently enhancing your backside. They use silicone implants to add shape and volume. In contrast, BBL uses your body’s own fat to create a fuller, lifted, and natural-looking contour.

Each option offers unique benefits depending on your body type and desired results.

    Buttock implants:

    • Ideal for patients with limited body fat, eliminating the need for donor fat.
    • Provides predictable and consistent volume increase.
    • Implants usually maintained their size over time.
    • The procedure does not contour other areas of the body.
    • Less initial swelling as compared to the fat transfer method.
    • Potential risks include implant shifting, infection, or implant rejection.

    Fat transfer with BBL:

    • Offers dual benefits by removing fat via liposuction and shaping the buttocks.
    • Results look and feel softer, more authentic.
    • Requires smaller incisions.
    • No risk of the body rejecting the fat or resulting complications.
    • Requires a sufficient amount of fat for transfer.
    • Some patients may need multiple sessions to achieve their desired results.
    • Not all the fat will survive; some of the fat may be reabsorbed over time.
    • Patients may not be able to sit on their buttocks for several weeks to maximize fat survival.

The two procedures differ not only in technique but also in results and potential side effects. A BBL is often preferred for its natural feel and the added benefit of contouring other areas of your body. Buttock implants can deliver a more dramatic, immediate change, but they may come with a longer recovery time and a higher risk of complications.

Dr. Shokrian will evaluate your body shape, available fat, and aesthetic goals to help determine which of these procedures is most suitable for you. He will explain the benefits, expected results, and potential risks of each procedure, and design a personalized plan to achieve the most balanced, and flattering outcome for your body.

How Much Does a Brazilian Butt Lift NYC Cost?

A BBL is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. Pricing can vary depending on individual goals and the extent of enhancements desired.

Several factors can affect the overall cost of a BBL, including:

    • Surgeon’s experience and expertise
    • Number of areas treated with liposuction
    • Length of operation
    • The amount of fat that needs to be retrieved and relocated
    • Facility and anesthesia fees
    • Compression garments
    • BBL pillow – a specialized cushion designed to reduce pressure and support healing
    • Lymphatic massage treatments
    • Whether your BBL is combined with other procedures like a mommy makeover or tummy tuck

Considering the factors that can impact cost, an in-person consultation with your surgeon is essential. Based on your body needs and aesthetic goals, your surgeon will develop a personalized treatment plan, which will determine your exact BBL cost.

Is a BBL Covered by Insurance?

For most patients, a BBL is an elective surgery performed to upgrade their self-image and make them look and feel good about themselves. Health insurance does not cover elective cosmetic procedures, so if you are considering a BBL, you will have to pay the full cost from your pocket.

However, in rare circumstances like reconstructive purposes following an injury or trauma the procedure may be deemed medically necessary and your insurance provider may cover a portion of the treatment. In such situations, proper documentation and prior authorization are required before the procedure can be approved.

At Millennial Plastic Surgery, we know that covering the cost of a BBL out of pocket may feel overwhelming. We provide flexible payment plans and third-party financing options to make your procedure more accessible and manage the costs.
