What Is Liposuction or Lipo Surgery?
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a popular cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body for a refined shape and contour.
This procedure targets stubborn fat deposits in areas like the abdomen, thighs, chest, and chin. Because it reshapes and refines the body’s natural curves, liposuction is often referred to as body contouring.
The fat removal technique slims and sculpts fatty areas into a smoother, more balanced, aesthetically pleasing silhouette. Liposuction is especially effective for treating localized fat that does not respond well to diet and exercise.
Dr. David Shokrian meticulously crafts and defines your body profile with liposuction, helping you achieve a slimmer, more proportioned figure that reflects your personal style.

“Liposuction is not about changing who you are; it's about revealing the best version of yourself.”
Dr. Shokrian
Why Get Liposuction?
At times, no matter how hard you work to get your body in shape, annoying love handles or unsightly saddle bags remain resistant to all efforts. Liposuction can help address these areas by removing excess fat and sculpting your body’s natural lines for a sleek, refined look.
You should go for liposuction if:
- You feel self-conscious about certain areas of your body due to stubborn fat deposits.
- You want to reduce or eliminate the fatty bulges in specific areas of your body.
- You seek a long-lasting solution for getting rid of fat deposits.
- You want your clothes to fit more comfortably and flatter your body looks.
- You want to restore your body shape after a pregnancy or significant weight loss.
- You are undergoing a procedure such as breast reduction, tummy tuck, mommy makeover, or arm lift, and want to combine it with liposuction to enhance your overall results.

What Is Awake or Tumescent Liposuction?
Awake liposuction, also known as tumescent liposuction, is a minimally invasive liposuction that uses local anesthesia. The patient remains awake during the procedure.
During the treatment, a special tumescent solution is injected into the targeted fat areas. This solution typically contains lidocaine to numb the area and epinephrine to gently constrict blood vessels. The fluid helps firm the fat tissue and minimize bleeding, making it easier to remove the fat safely and precisely.
With improved surgical control and accurate fat removal techniques, tumescent liposuction typically results in less bruising, reduced risks, and a faster recovery compared to traditional liposuction and other procedures performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Shokrian uses ultrasonic technology to break down fat cells, protect surrounding tissue, and support a smoother recovery.
Benefits of Awake Liposuction
Awake or tumescent liposuction is ideal for individuals who want to eliminate the stubborn fat deposits in their bodies but prefer a less invasive approach, with a quicker return to their lives.
Its benefits include:
- Quick outpatient procedure
- Faster recovery and minimum downtime
- A more comfortable and personalized experience
- Minimized bleeding, bruising, and swelling
- Improved surgical precision
- Smooth and natural results
- Minimal scarring
- Permanent removal of fat cells
- Lower cost compared to traditional liposuction, as it uses local anesthesia
- Efficient delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the cells when the fat cells are removed
Liposuction is safer than ever. Like any surgical procedure, it carries some risks, but modern techniques and technological advancements have minimized them. Dr. Shokrian uses liposuction as a precise tool to help you achieve your desired proportions and embrace your body confidently.

Am I a Good Candidate for Fat Removal Surgery?
An awake liposuction may be the most suitable option for you if:
- You are close to your ideal weight and want to refine specific areas of your body.
- You have good skin elasticity to support smooth contouring.
- You are in overall good health and do not have any medical conditions that can jeopardize surgery results or affect recovery.
- You don’t smoke or are ready to give up smoking to undergo this procedure.
- You are ready to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
- You prefer local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia.
- You prefer a quick and comparatively easy recovery.
- The treatment area is small to moderate in size.
- You have realistic expectations about the results.
It is important to understand that liposuction is a body-shaping cosmetic procedure, not a weight loss treatment. It works best for individuals who struggle with stubborn pockets of fat that remain despite consistent efforts to shrink specific areas. If you have already worked with a dietitian, tried several diets, or followed different workout routines without achieving results, liposuction may help target these persistent bulges or folds.
Our expert surgeons review your medical history and carefully evaluate your eligibility to determine whether awake liposuction is the most suitable option for your health and cosmetic goals.

What Happens During an Awake Liposuction?
- You will be given local anesthesia, with or without sedation, to ensure you remain comfortable and stress-free during the procedure.
- The surgeon will carefully mark your skin to identify the accurate treatment areas and guide the fat removal process.
- A tumescent solution is injected into the target areas to constrict blood vessels, minimize bleeding, and facilitate fat removal.
- One or more small incisions are made, often in natural skin folds, which allow insertion of a thin tube called a cannula to gently remove fat deposits. The cannula breaks up and vacuums out the fat cells.
- You may feel pressure, vibrations, or a tugging sensation while the fat cells are being removed. It is similar to a deep tissue massage and does not cause any pain.
- After the fat is removed, the incisions are closed, bandaged, and compression garments are put in place to help with healing.
- During this time, the medical team will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels to ensure your well-being throughout the procedure.
The entire procedure usually takes 1–4 hours, depending on how much area is being treated. When the surgery is over, you will be taken to the recovery room, where you will be observed for a few hours. As awake lipo is an outpatient procedure, you will be able to go home the same day, after the medical team confirms that you are stable and ready for discharge.
We can’t wait to meet you! We offer comprehensive consultations with Dr. Shokrian, and his team both virtually and in person.
212-421-7123Recovering From Awake Liposuction
Awake liposuction generally has a shorter recovery time compared to traditional liposuction. However, recovery and surgical outcomes can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the treated areas, the amount of fat removed, and the body’s natural healing process.
You may experience mild swelling, tenderness, and bruising in the treated areas, but these side effects will improve over the first few weeks. Most patients can return to light activities within 48 hours and gradually resume normal routines within one to two weeks, as long as they feel well.
While initial results may be noticeable within days, it takes at least a few weeks for the full effects of awake liposuction to become visible, as swelling disappears. You will be able to enjoy your new, refined contours after a few months.
A healthy lifestyle, combined with balanced nutrition and regular exercise, is essential for preserving your newly sculpted physique.

How Much Does Awake Liposuction Cost?
The cost of awake liposuction varies for each patient, based on the specific treatment. Choosing awake liposuction can also help reduce expenses related to general anesthesia, making the treatment more affordable.
Several factors can influence the total cost of liposuction, including:
- Number of treatment areas
- Amount of fat removed
- Your surgeon’s expertise
- Facility location
- Technique used
- If your liposuction has been combined with other treatments
- Your medical history
As every patient’s needs are different, determining the exact cost in advance is tough. An in-person consultation with the surgeon is essential to get a personalized evaluation and an accurate pricing estimate of your treatment.

Every year, thousands of men and women in the Big Apple pursue liposuction NYC because it gets the job done. And lipo surgery is a long-lasting solution, as long as you maintain a healthy weight.
212-421-7123Is Awake Liposuction Covered by Insurance?
Awake liposuction is considered a cosmetic body contouring procedure that removes fat for aesthetic reasons rather than to treat a medical problem. For this reason, it is not covered by health insurance.
However, there are rare exceptions when insurance may cover part of the cost if liposuction addresses a medical condition, such as a painful fat disorder and lymphedema that causes swelling. Liposuction may be considered medically necessary when fat removal is part of reconstructive surgery following significant weight loss or other medical procedures.
In these cases, you will need medical records or documentation from your healthcare provider, as well as prior authorization from your insurance company, before the procedure can be approved. Also, check with your insurance provider to understand the specific benefits and coverage your plan offers.
At Millennial Plastic Surgery, we understand that paying the full cost of liposuction, especially when combined with other procedures, can be overwhelming. To make body contouring more accessible, we provide flexible payment plans and third-party financing options to help you manage the cost comfortably.
