What Is Thighs Liposuction?
Thigh liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that removes excess fat from the thighs, helping create a more aligned body outline. Also known as lipoplasty, it can give you a slimmer lower body.
Thigh fat can build up due to genetics, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations. This causes issues like outer-thigh fullness, known as “saddlebags,” and inner-thigh friction, called “chub rub.” Thigh liposuction removes surplus fat cells, tones the thighs, and enhances overall body harmony.
Common treatment areas are:
- Outer thighs – Helps reduce excess fullness, resulting in a more symmetrical profile.
- Inner thighs – Refines contour and may ease friction between the thighs
- Inner knees – Improves the transition between the thighs and knees for easy movement.
At Millennial Plastic Surgery, our experts create treatment plans to suit each patient’s body and skin needs. Dr. David Shokrian ensures his approach corresponds with your desires and physical characteristics to achieve younger-looking results.

Why Сonsider Thigh Liposuction?
Hiding excess thigh fat with clothing or compression garments may offer a temporary solution, but it is often uncomfortable and does not address the main concern. Thigh liposuction removes unwanted fat, creating a more proportionate lower-body outline.
A thigh liposuction can offer several benefits. They include:
- Improved proportion between the waist and thighs, helping clothes fit better
- Greater ease in wearing a wider range of clothing styles
- Enhanced confidence in how your thighs look
- Less friction or chafing between the thighs leads to greater comfort during movement, such as walking and exercise.
- Reduced thigh bulk which makes performing daily activities easy
- A slightly more balanced and even-looking lower body shape
For some individuals, these changes lead to greater self-esteem and a more positive body image. Dr. Shokrian focuses on factors such as body type, skin elasticity, and lifestyle when developing customized treatment plans to support optimal outcomes.
Thigh liposuction is often combined with other body contouring procedures to achieve more uniform and harmonious results, particularly in the lower body.
Depending on your goals, your surgeon may recommend combining thigh liposuction with procedures such as:
- Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
- Hip or flank liposuction
- Buttock lift
- Lower body lift
- Panniculectomy
- Mommy makeover
In some cases, thigh liposuction is performed alongside a thigh lift. While liposuction removes excess fat, a thigh lift addresses loose or sagging skin to create a smoother, firmer outline.
Having these procedures together can provide comprehensive results and usually involves a single recovery period, which is more convenient for many patients. Your surgeon will evaluate your anatomy, goals, and health to recommend the best approach for safe and effective outcomes.

212-421-7123Am I A Good Candidate for Thigh Liposuction?
You may be an ideal candidate for thigh liposuction if you meet the following criteria:
- You have stubborn fat deposits in the thighs that do not respond to diet and exercise.
- You are in good health and do not have medical conditions that may affect healing, such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
- You are at or near a stable body weight, within approximately 25 pounds of your ideal weight.
- You have good skin elasticity.
- You are a non-smoker or are willing to quit smoking before and after surgery to support proper healing.
- You have realistic expectations about surgical results and understand the potential benefits and risks.
- You are determined to maintain a healthy lifestyle after the procedure to help preserve outcomes.
Thigh liposuction improves the lower body profile by reducing unwanted fat deposits in both men and women. Your surgeon will assess your concerns, and physical condition to determine if this procedure is the right option for enhancing your body proportions and peace of mind.
How Does Thigh Lipo Differ From Thigh Lift Surgery?
While thigh liposuction and thigh lift surgery are both surgical contouring procedures, they address different concerns and are recommended based on your individual needs.
Thigh liposuction removes excess fat from the thighs, improving contour and reducing localized fullness. If there is significant skin laxity, a thigh lift may be recommended to address loose or sagging skin. Your body’s fat distribution and skin quality will determine which procedure, or combination of procedures, is most appropriate for you.
Thigh liposuction
- It removes fat deposits from the thighs.
- It works best for patients with good skin elasticity.
- It improves form and reduces fullness in specific areas.
- It is a minimally invasive procedure with small incisions.
- It does not address or tighten loose or sagging skin.
Thigh lift surgery
- It removes excess skin and tightens the thigh area.
- It may reduce the appearance of cellulite or skin dimpling in some cases.
- It tightens and reshapes the thighs for a firmer, better look.
- It works best for patients with significant skin laxity.
- It helps increase firmness and overall leg shape.
- It is a more invasive procedure with larger incisions.
- It results in more visible scarring compared to liposuction.
Liposuction is most effective for eliminating stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. Sometimes, surgeons recommend combining thigh liposuction with a thigh lift to address both excess fat and loose skin for more comprehensive results.
In case of minimal skin laxity, liposuction alone may be sufficient. However, if mild tightening is needed, your surgeon may discuss less invasive options, such as a scarless thigh lift, based on your individual body and skin condition.
During your consultation, Dr. Shokrian or Dr. Mohamed Elfar will examine your body, specifically your thighs, and discuss your concerns and expectations to determine whether liposuction, a thigh lift, or a combination of procedures is most suitable for you. Based on this evaluation, he will work out an individualized treatment plan to achieve balanced outcomes that complement your overall body proportions.

How is Thigh Liposuction Performed?
- Thigh liposuction is typically performed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of the procedure and the areas being treated. This ensures you are relaxed throughout the surgery.
- Next, the surgeon makes small, strategically placed incisions in the targeted sites to minimize visible scarring.
- A thin tube, called a cannula, is inserted through these incisions to gently break up and remove excess fat.
- The loosened fat is then suctioned out from your thighs to create a smoother, more defined appearance.
- Once the desired shape is attained, the incisions are either closed with sutures or left to heal naturally, depending on their size.
- The treated areas may be covered with compression garments to help reduce swelling, support healing, and maintain the new results.
- Thigh liposuction typically takes between one and four hours, depending on the number of areas treated and the amount of fat removed. Once the procedure is complete, you will be moved to a recovery area and monitored until the effects of anesthesia begin to wear off.
In most cases, thigh liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day once the surgeon confirms you are stable and ready for discharge.
Recovering From Thigh Liposuction
Recovery after thigh liposuction varies from person to person and depends on different factors, including the amount of fat removed, the complexity of the procedure, and your body’s natural healing ability. Mild to moderate pain, swelling, and bruising in the treated areas are common during the initial healing phase and typically subside within a few weeks.
During this time, it is important to rest, keep your legs elevated as much as possible, limit physical activity for the first few weeks, and wear compression garments as advised. Following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions is essential as it can help reduce swelling, support healing, and ensure the best outcomes.
Most patients can slowly resume normal daily activities within 2 to 3 weeks with proper care. However, all strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, intense exercise, bending, or squatting, should be avoided for approximately 4 to 6 weeks or until approved by your surgeon. Excessive strain on the treated areas may lead to increased swelling, delayed healing, or other complications.
You can return to work within 1 to 3 weeks, depending on your comfort level and recovery progress. However, if your job involves strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting, you may need additional time off to support proper healing.
You will start noticing improvements as swelling subsides, but it may take 3 to 6 months to see the full results after the body has healed. By this time, most patients can return to their normal routines. Maintaining a stable weight, staying active, and attending scheduled appointments can help with long-term outcomes after thigh liposuction.
What Results Can You Expect From Thigh Liposuction?
Once the stubborn pockets of fat are removed from your thighs, they are gone forever. Within a few weeks, you will notice the final outcome.
They include:
- A slimmer and more contoured appearance of the thighs
- Reduced localized fat deposits, such as outer thigh fullness
- Better definition between the thighs and surrounding areas
- A more streamlined transition from hips to knees
- Better overall leg outline with enhanced proportion, without feelings of restriction in clothing
Liposuction is a permanent fat loss surgery. However, this does not mean you cannot gain weight. The best way to preserve your newly sculpted shape is to adopt healthy habits that include proper hydration, an active lifestyle, stress management, and sustaining a consistent weight and muscle tone.
How Much Does Thigh Liposuction Cost?
The cost of thigh liposuction varies depending on your individual needs, the extent of fat removal, and overall complexity of the procedure.
It also depends on several other factors that include:
- The expertise and experience of the surgeon
- Your geographical location
- The number and size of areas being treated
- Whether the procedure is combined with other body sculpting surgeries
- Facility fee
- Anesthesia fee
- Compression garment
- Medications
Because each treatment plan is customized, pricing is best determined during a personal consultation. Your surgeon will provide an accurate cost estimate based on your goals, treatment areas, and overall surgical plan.
Is Thigh Lipo Covered by Insurance?
Thigh liposuction is considered an elective cosmetic surgery. This means it is typically performed to improve appearance rather than treat a medical condition. Because of this, it is usually not covered by health insurance.
However, there are rare exceptions in which liposuction may be partially or fully covered if deemed medically necessary. This may include:
Treatment of conditions involving abnormal fat buildup, such as lipedema
Correction of a deformity, injury, or functional impairment
Cases where excess tissue contributes to pain, mobility limitations, or other health complications
Even in such situations, coverage is not guaranteed. Your approval depends on a confirmed medical diagnosis from a qualified healthcare provider, documentation showing that non-surgical treatments have been unsuccessful, and pre-authorization from the insurance provider.
