What Is a Mini Neck Lift?

A mini neck lift, also known as Submental Platysmaplasty, is a cosmetic procedure for tightening sagging skin and muscles in the neck and jawline. It is designed to be less invasive than a full neck lift. It creates a youthful and structured neck without the extended recovery time, allowing you to resume your routine activities sooner.

This procedure is best suited for individuals with:

    • Mild skin laxity
    • Early jowling
    • Slight muscle banding in the neck

A mini neck lift targets the submental area, the area under your jaw that forms a triangle that usually does not respond to diet and exercise. It specifically treats early signs of aging with smaller, discreet incisions compared to a full facelift.  Most individuals begin to see waddling and loose skin in the submental region after a successful diet and exercise program.  This area shows up from the front and sides in pictures and is most visible in the mirror.

A mini neck lift can be performed alone or combined with other facial procedures to achieve natural-looking improvement, enhanced rejuvenation, and youthful appearance.

Benefits of a Mini Neck Lift

A mini neck lift offers a range of benefits for individuals seeking refinement rather than a complete overhaul to improve their overall neck and jawline silhouette.

    They are:

    • Reduced sagging – A mini neck lift removes sagging skin and stubborn fat deposits in the neck area, resulting in a more youthful, toned profile. The taut neck muscles create a defined jawline and smooth, contoured neck.
    • Improved contour – By removing excess skin and fat, a mini neck lift enhances the definition of your neck and jawline, giving a naturally sculpted and refined appearance.
    • Enhanced self-confidence – With a smoother, enhanced neck and shaped jawline, you feel more confident and comfortable in your looks.
    • Minimal scarring – A mini neck lift is a minimally invasive procedure, which means smaller, discreet scars and a faster recovery time.
    • Long-lasting results - A mini neck lift keeps your neck youthful and well-defined for years.

Dr. Shokrian explains the benefits of a mini neck lift and how it can help address mild skin laxity. He guides you in making an informed decision about the procedure, ensuring it aligns with your health and aesthetic goals.

Differences Between a Mini Neck Lift and a Full Neck Lift

If you are considering neck rejuvenation, it is essential to first understand the difference between a mini neck lift and a full neck lift, also known as a traditional neck lift. While both procedures are designed to improve the contour and appearance of the neck, they differ in surgical extent, the level of correction required, recovery time, and cost.

A mini neck lift is a less invasive version of a full neck lift, which addresses minor signs of aging in the neck area. It targets mild to moderate sagging under the chin and along the jawline. In contrast, a full neck lift is a more comprehensive surgical procedure that addresses significant sagging, excess skin, and muscle laxity across the entire neck.

A Mini Neck Lift typically involves:

    • Smaller incisions that are placed discreetly behind the ears
    • Less tissue manipulation
    • A shorter recovery time
    • Local anesthesia with or without sedation for patient comfort

A mini neck lift provides gentle enhancement with minimal downtime, while a full neck lift offers long-lasting correction for advanced neck aging.

A normal (full) neck lift involves:

    • Larger incisions to access the neck and jawline
    • A longer recovery period of four to six weeks
    • General anesthesia
    • Repositioning or removal of excess skin
    • Tightening of underlying muscles
    • Removal or redistribution of fat for improved contour

Choosing the right option depends on the degree of sagging, your skin elasticity, and your aesthetic goals. Dr. Shokrian carefully evaluates your unique body needs, and overall health, to determine whether you are a good candidate for a mini neck lift.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mini Neck Lift?

A mini neck lift is ideal if you want noticeable improvement without undergoing a full neck lift.

You may be a good candidate if you meet the following criteria:

    • You have mild to moderate fat or skin on the neck that is not going away with diet and exercise.
    • You have overall good health.
    • You have realistic expectations about the procedure outcome.
    • You do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking for some time before and after the procedure for the best surgical results.
    • You have good skin elasticity.
    • You have reached or can maintain a stable weight.

Because it is less invasive, a mini neck lift works best in the early stages of neck aging, rather than for significant muscle banding or excess skin.

You may not be an ideal candidate for a Mini Neck Lift if:

    • You have severe skin laxity or extra skin hanging on the neck.
    • You have significant vertical neck banding that can only be corrected with extensive tightening.
    • You have fat accumulation under the chin that can only be removed with liposuction or other procedures.
    • You have very poor skin elasticity and limited tightening would not get the desired results.
    • You have uncontrolled medical conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
    • You plan to lose weight in the long run.
    • You are not prepared to make healthy changes to your lifestyle and give up smoking.

Dr. Shokrian will examine your neck anatomy and skin quality to determine whether a mini neck lift is the most appropriate option for you. He will only recommend a mini neck lift if he believes it will provide better, safer, and lasting results.

What Happens During a Mini Neck Lift?

    • You will be administered a local anesthesia with sedation. Depending on the extent of surgery and your preference, your surgeon may choose to use general anesthesia.
    • The surgeon will make small incisions around your ears and under the chin. They are shorter and less extensive than those used in a traditional neck lift.
    • In some cases, surgeons may opt for a single-incision approach, which involves performing surgery through one small cut, instead of multiple incisions.
    • Underlying muscles and tissues of the neck and jawline are lifted and tightened, and any excess fat and sagging skin are cautiously removed or trimmed.
    • The small incisions are closed with sutures, placed carefully to minimize scarring.
    • Your treated area may be lightly bandaged, and you will be moved to a recovery room for monitoring before discharge.

A mini neck lift is an outpatient procedure. If you did not receive general anesthesia, you can leave once the medical team confirms you have safely recovered from sedation and the procedure.

What to Expect During Your Mini Neck Lift Consultation?

Your mini neck lift begins with a detailed consultation with one of our surgeons, Dr. Shokrian or Dr. Elfar. During this session, they will evaluate your current health, review your medical history, and overall lifestyle, and ask about your aesthetic goals.

They will assess the amount of fat or skin to be removed to ensure a mini neck lift is the most suitable procedure for you. They may even create a projection of what a mini neck lift might do for your facial profile.

This consultation sets realistic expectations for your results. You can also bring a list of questions or concerns you want to discuss with the surgeon. It helps them tailor your treatment plan to your unique needs and prepare you for a smooth and successful procedure.

Impressed with the personalized and attentive service provided.

    Mini Neck Lift Recovery Timeline

The recovery time for a mini neck lift is typically faster and less intensive than a traditional neck lift. However, the results vary from person to person, depending on your unique anatomy, the extent of the procedure, and your overall health and healing ability. Following your surgeon’s post-operative guidelines can help you heal more comfortably, avoid complications, and achieve favorable results.

You can return to light daily activities within a few days or a week after the procedure. You will experience mild swelling and bruising in the first week, which gradually improves. You can manage pain or discomfort with medications prescribed by your surgeon. While you can perform routine activities, avoid bending, stretching, or strenuous neck movements.

It typically takes 1 to 3 months for the final results to be visible, as the tissues need time to settle, the skin heals, and the neck contour becomes fully refined.

At Millennial Plastic Surgery, our surgeons provide clear instructions for a smooth healing and optimal outcomes of your neck lift. You can look forward to a lifted, sculpted neck and renewed confidence within a short time.

What Other Procedures Can Be Combined With a Mini Neck Lift?

While a mini neck lift can deliver significant improvements, it may not address all the concerns you have about your neck and jawline. In some cases, combining procedures can enhance overall balance and create more comprehensive, natural-looking results.

Dr. Shokrian may recommend integrating a mini neck lift with another plastic surgery procedure to achieve your desired outcomes.

    These may include:

    • Liposuction – It removes additional fat from your chin that cannot be removed during a mini neck lift.
    • Chin implant – It enhances chin projection and improves facial balance if you have a weak or recessed chin.
    • Double chin surgery – It targets extra fat beneath the chin for a more sculpted profile.
    • Juvederm – It is a dermal filler that smooths fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth and chin.
    • Sculptra – It stimulates collagen production to restore volume and improve overall facial symmetry.

The results of a mini neck lift may not be permanent, as the natural aging process may cause some degree of skin laxity and muscle weakness over time. You may need boosters after 5 to 10 years to maintain your sleek-looking neckline.

How Much Does a Mini Neck Lift Cost in NYC?

The cost of a mini neck lift can vary, depending on several factors.

    Some of them include:

    • The surgeon’s fee, based on their expertise and experience
    • Anesthesia cost
    • Facility expenses

Scope of the procedure and whether it will be combined with other treatments

The actual cost may vary based on your specific circumstances and individual goals. An in-person consultation with your surgeon is essential to get a personalized evaluation and an accurate estimate of your mini neck lift.

Is a Mini Neck Lift Covered by Insurance?

A mini neck lift is considered an elective cosmetic procedure that is designed to improve appearance rather than treat a medical condition. Because of this, it is generally not covered by health insurance. Most insurance providers categorize surgeries like neck lifts as non-medically necessary, which means patients are expected to pay the full cost of the procedure.

In rare cases, if the procedure also addresses a functional or medical issue, such as excess skin that interferes with swallowing or other health complications, insurance may cover part of the cost.

However, you will need proper documentation from your healthcare provider and prior authorization from your insurance company before the procedure is approved.

At Millennial Plastic Surgery, we realize that paying a large sum for a mini neck lift out of pocket can be difficult. To make achieving a more toned and sculpted neck contour more accessible, we offer flexible payment plans and third-party financing options that make these procedures more affordable.
